This project shows how the use of natural materials and layout can make what could have been a fairly straightforward extension an exciting piece of architectural flare. Our clients wanted to remodel an old, basic extension to their Grade II listed Georgian terraced home in Islington and add to its overall volume. The brief was to create an extra bedroom as well as a new kitchen and living space. Underpinning our design was the idea of connecting the original Georgian house to the large garden beyond. Because of this we focused on a wooden box structure, like a solid piece of origami, except made with beautiful Iroko wood. We changed the height of the rear extension, creating a better view onto the garden from the upper floors and increasing the natural light into the building throughout. Using smooth stone flagging, we created a seamless transition from indoors to out, and framed by the wood and glass throughout we created a space that is fresh, light and airy while retaining a warmth and earthiness that turns a stylish house into a home
